The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the ability to question certain decisions made by the official, echoing the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
